When this map was created, little was know about the interior of the African continent by anyone outside of Africa. Most of the central part of Africa would not be explored by European for many more years. You will notice that most of the interior is blank.
The original hand-painted map, from which this replica was made, was created by Thomas Bradford in Boston. Bradford only created maps for a few years and never in great quantity. The maps from 1841 were some of the first made with the new stone lithography process, recently brought over from Europe. This is a striking example of an early lithographed map.
