-click to see this piece custom framed- | | | | Born in Bristol, CT in 1792, Samuel Mitchell and his sons were the most prominent publishers of maps and atlases for over 50 years in the United States. Fascinated by geography (and the lack of books lacking) from an early age, Mitchell relocated to Philadelphia in 1829, the center of publishing in America.
His first cartographic work was the re-issue of Finley's New American Atlas published in 1831. While the map content was the same, Mitchell significantly revised the maps with the addition of new roads and towns.
In the late 1830's Mitchell began the publication of his school atlas, offered to students from 1839 to 1886. In 1860, Samuel Augustus Mitchell Jr. began to issue the New General Atlas, while his father continued to publish wall maps and other works.
